The Position
The Center for Media Justice seeks an experienced movement leader to provide internal direction and program management to a growing organization.  The position is a great opportunity for a highly skilled manager and institution-builder to contribute to the growing fields of racial justice communications and media justice advocacy. The position is 40 hours/wk and reports to CMJ’s Executive Director.  Some travel required. Who We Are
The Center for Media Justice is a national media strategy and action center based in Oakland, California.  Our work is grounded in the belief that the power to communicate belongs to everyone, but that the right to free and open communication is unequally distributed along race, class and gender lines.  The CMJ builds the power of grassroots movements and disenfranchised communities to secure their communications rights, transform public debate and win media accountability in the service of justice.

Primary Responsibilities
The CMJ Associate Director has three primary roles:
1.    Guiding the CMJ’s exciting program work and developing supporting infrastructure
2.    Supervising program staff to ensure outcomes and alignment with CMJ’s vision and mission
3.    Building relationships with funders, allies and associates to ensure that the work is resourced and effective

The Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate is a movement leader who is passionate about building strong organizations and a strong movement for justice. Experience in communications, journalism or media policy is preferred, but a clear vision for how communications and media change contribute to a strong movement for justice is a must.  Qualified applicants must have:
•    3+ years experience as a non-profit manager and 5+ years experience in social justice organizing or activism
•    Experience in either strategic communications, journalism, or media policy advocacy
•    Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment, and balance leadership with collaborative decision-making
•    Ability to build lasting relationships at multiple levels – with supervisees, allies, and funders
•    Proficiency with Macintosh computers, internet navigation, MS Word and MS Excel and skill with presentation applications such as Graffle and PowerPoint or Keynote is a plus
